Green Shirt Day

#EarthWeek2015 was a success! The school was full of natural light, there was minimal garbage and Green Shirt Day was inspiring. We had a record number of students walking, biking and carpooling to school. Thank you for your support 🙂

The Phantom Toothbrush!

The Phantom Tollbooth is my favourite book, and I read it to the Grade 3s every year. It’s a classic: a hilarious, touching and pun-filled adventure through the Kingdom of Knowledge. The only problem is, sometimes the title doesn’t make immediate sense to the students, so I have to explain what a tollbooth is, and also that, in this context, “phantom” doesn’t mean a literal ghost, but is actually a synonym for “mysterious”.

A few years ago, a boy in Grade 3 couldn’t remember the title and asked me: “What’s the name of that book we’re reading? The Phantom… Toothbrush??” Ever since then, I’ve joked that we need to write a sequel where Milo finds a mysterious toothbrush that transports him to the land of… dental hygiene…? We’ll work on it.

Well, believe it or not, today as I was tidying up the library, I discovered A MYSTERIOUS TOOTHBRUSH in a Ziploc baggie. It truly is The Phantom Toothbrush.

It must be a sign.

Let’s Do Lunch!

Today was a very busy lunch recess in the Library. Cold, drizzly days almost always mean a packed library since many boys prefer to stay inside. What choices do our library users make when they come here at lunch time? Let’s see…

Human Library- November Edition

Last week we welcomed our second “human book” of the year. Johnny Rodgers is a computer programmer and software designer. He makes apps and websites and can write code in 6 languages! He is a User Interface Developer at Slack, a company that was recently valued at over $1 billion dollars.

Some good/funny questions we overheard:

What is your favourite part of programming? (grade 5)

How many coding languages do you know? (grade 3)

What is your business model?- no joke! (grade 7)

Who are your best friends at work? (grade 2)

Have you ever been electrocuted? (grade 3)

Can you show us some good coding websites? (grade 3)

Great guest, great conversation, great morning. Thank you Johnny!!

DJ Kenlee

Grade 5 student Kenneth Lee is interested in learning about making and mixing music. Who better to bring in then our very own Mr. Docherty! Mr. Docherty works at the senior school and is also a teacher-on-call at the junior school.  Mr. D even brought some DJ headphones for Kenneth to try on! Together they imported songs, removed vocals, and worked on slowing down and speeding up the beat.  Mr. D shared some of his own work with Kenneth to allow him to see the possibilities.  I’m not sure if Kenneth knew how difficult and involved mixing music is, but he does now!  DJ Kenlee has a lot to learn, but for a 10 year old he is doing exceptionally well 🙂

This will be an ongoing project for Kenneth and we look forward to hearing more from him in the near future.

A special thanks to Mr. Docherty for contributing his time.
